PUHI began installing its first biochar factory in Hämeenlinna in the fall of 2023. The first biochar was successfully produced in March 2024. Since then, PUHI has conducted several successful trials and made significant process improvements to the facility. 

PUHI has been granted an investment aid from Business Finland of 500 000€ for establishing biochar production in Hämeenlinna.

This environmental permit allows PUHI to process up to 20,000 tons of wood- and agriculture-based side streams annually into biochar, district heating, and carbon removal credits.
