PUHI receives environmental permit to start large-scale biochar production

PUHI - Down to Earth Climate Tech.

The environmental permit allows PUHI to process up to 20,000 tons of wood- and agriculture-based side streams annually into biochar, district heating, and carbon removal credits. The side streams include locally sourced sawmill residues, demolition wood, green waste, straw, and grain husk to name some.

“We are happy to have received the environmental permit according to plan in cooperation with Hämeenlinna, as it enables us to use side streams that are considered as waste and turn them into valuable products. The environmental permit is an important part as PUHI will produce biochar that is registered and certified according to the latest standards and certifications, amongst those the European Biochar Certificate (EBC).” CEO Elis Hirvonen

👉 The first biochar production plant is under construction!

PUHI first biochar production plant is being set up in the Kiertokapula Oy industrial area, dedicated to the circular economy, part of the Industrial Park MORE business district, located in The City of Hämeenlinna, Southern Finland. The location in the MORE business district is ideal for biochar production as it allows local cooperation, is close to the feedstock, has access to the district heating network, and is logistically in an optimal location.

“Everything is ready for the delivery of the pyrolysis plant and its components. The goal is to complete full factory installation, set to work, and commissioning by the end of the year. The commercial production will start in mid-2024.” CTO Jarkko Nummela

👉 Making biochar climate relevant!

Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR) is the most mature climate solution that enables permanent carbon removal while providing numerous co-benefits. The knowledge of biochar’s benefits across its multiple applications has significantly increased in recent years, and the biochar market is rapidly growing. To address this demand, PUHI has developed a business model with an efficient supply chain for pyrolysis technology that allows us to rapidly scale up and set up new locations around the globe.

We aim to reach annual carbon removal of 300,000 tons of carbon dioxide by 2035.
